We need to talk about why we’re so obsessed with missing the point, because frankly, it’s getting exhausting. Let’s recap the absurdity of the last seven days, shall we? The vacation ‘bloat’ that launched a thousand postsFirst up on the internet’s obsession radar: Kareena Kapoor, who just got back to Mumbai after a dreamy vacation in Europe. Naturally, the paparazzi waited outside her gym to snap her coming out of the building. She was wearing normal clothes, trying to get into her car, shielding herself from the rain. The real problemHere’s the thing: it’s easy to laugh off these internet outrage cycles as silly pop-culture noise. But when you step back, it’s actually dark. Women across this country are dealing with real, structural, daily challenges that genuinely impact their lives. How many women actually have total control over their own money, career choices, and financial futures? Are women able to walk down the street at 9 pm without having to calculate the safest route home? Are young girls getting the same resources, encouragement, and freedom to pursue higher education and careers as men? How are women being treated in their own homes, workplaces, and relationships? Are they supported, or are they constantly expected to compromise and be taken for granted? These are the things that actually matter. These are the issues that determine whether a woman gets to live a safe, autonomous, and fulfilling life. Yet, instead of using our platforms, our group chats, and our dinner table conversations to talk about real progress, we choose to waste our collective time and energy policing two famous actors — one who had the audacity to exist after a vacation, and another who had the audacity to wear a top she liked. Surveillance is easy, change is hardThe truth is, judging a woman’s body from behind a smartphone screen takes zero effort.
