Virtually unknown less than a month ago, Bittu Tabahi is all over our feeds these days. The 21-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, who broke the internet a few weeks ago with his clean-up of a river in his home state, has brought the campaign to the national capital region. A cursory look at his Instagram profile and you’d think Surendra Singh Choudhary, better known online as Bittu Tabahi, is a seasoned content creator: nearly two million followers, 800-plus posts and one million views as the baseline for most of his recent videos. In Delhi this week, Bittu removed around 585 kg of waste from the Yamuna riverbank in just 4.5 hours. He was joined by a team of volunteers for the activity. Two days later, he cleaned up the Khedki Daula area in Gurgaon.
It’s no surprise that Bittu’s drive in the NCR has caught the attention of people in other cities. A Bengaluru-based entrepreneur took to X to suggest that Bittu Tabahi, billionaire Nithin Kamath and Canadian vlogger Caleb Friesen be invited to inaugurate a citizen-led movement to fix Bengaluru’s broken infrastructure. Our feeds are full of people complaining about problems. It’s rare to see someone simply pick up a garbage bag and get to work, and that’s one reason Bittu’s videos work. Going viral is the easy part. The harder part is getting these videos to push the authorities to do their job. In the meantime, we can hope Bittu’s campaign nudges a few of his followers to think twice before littering, and perhaps even pick up some trash around them.
