The end of an era, a leak and other mischiefsAsha Bhosle bids adieu, Karan Johar gets Meryl Streep's approval, and actor Vijay's final film gets leaked online.
Hello! Welcome to the first edition of the HT Entertainment newsletter, straight from the Hindustan Times news desk! Here we will round up the buzziest headlines that made the most noise in the week, including updates about new releases, latest box-office trends and juiciest gossips handpicked by your favourite entertainment destination. But one thing is for certain: if there is one word we dislike, it's diplomacy. Last week ended on a heartbreaking note, with the demise of Asha Bhosle. There are singers and then there is someone like her—a voice that permeates generations and shapes their perceptions on life and love. There was something magical, something undeniably timeless about her voice, the way it could hold so many emotions at once. Interestingly, one of her last credits as a playback singer was in the biggest box-office blockbuster of last year. In Dhurandhar, when Hamza whisks away Yalina on his bike and speeds through the highway to escape the police, it is Asha Bhosle's melodious voice that infuses the background with Monica O My Darling! The R.D. Burman composition from the movie Caravan continues to be one of Bhosle's most popular songs, and marks a fitting instance to show how timeless her voice is. She might be gone but her voice is here forever for a whole new generation to discover, relish and celebrate. Speaking of icons, all eyes are on The Devil Wears Prada 2, and on Miranda Priestley's return to the Runway magazine to serve some serious fashion shade. So far, Meryl Streep is acing it in the worldwide promotional tour ahead of the May 1 release, accompanied by Anne Hathaway. Is Anne serving Andrea on the red carpet too? Is she method dressing? I can't tell because she is clearly being sidestepped by Meryl on every single stop. The cerulean blue seems to be a constant, but Meryl Streep’s Shanghai premiere look is one to savour. Elsewhere, it was Karan Johar who got to meet both Meryl and Anne for an interview, which we are yet to see. But from what we have seen, Meryl seems to be impressed with KJo's fashion game! Guts! Elsewhere, the Tamil film industry woke up to a huge shock, with parts of superstar Vijay’s Jana Nayagan leaking online. The film was Vijay's final as an actor before he forays into politics, and has yet to release in theatres. From Rajinikanth to Chiranjeevi, several actors slammed the piracy of the film, while Kamal Haasan called it the “result of systemic failure”. Systemic or not, the piracy of a huge film like Jana Nayagan (which, reportedly, is made at a budget of ₹500 crore) is an unmitigated attack on the industry that points at a system in need of a swift reality check. Whether Vijay wins the elections or not is a separate question, but his fans need a quick answer. Meanwhile, all hell broke loose on the latest episode of Splitsvilla Season 16. Baseer Ali gave some new mischief tasks to the contestants, which did not end well for a few. Diksha was clearly told to pack and keep Akansha's clothes out of the room but she stepped up and threw them instead. Did she not hear the instruction in the first place? The situation turned ugly in no time. Akansha did not back down and Diksha pushed her. But if anyone stole the show, it was Suzzane, who stood up for her friend and took all of Diksha's clothes and threw it on the road. The episode was chaotic and upsetting, and had me wondering why all the mischiefs had to be given on the same day in the first place. Ideal match or not, this season is more about mischief match. Till next week.
