The Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested a man for allegedly raping and killing a post-graduate trainee doctor inside a government-run hospital, officers aware of the matter said. The incident jolted West Bengal and led to protests by medical staff across the state, with chief minister Mamata Banerjee saying that the government will seek capital punishment against the guilty. Police said that the accused, identified as Kolkata-resident Sanjay Roy, was arrested on the basis of CCTV footage, circumstantial evidence, and a Bluetooth headphone found near the body. “A wireless headphone was found at the crime spot. In one CCTV video, Roy was seen using the headphone, but it was missing in subsequent footage of his. We later found that the headphone was paired with Roy’s mobile,” a police officer familiar with the investigation said. On Friday, the semi-clothed body of the 28-year-old woman was found inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, one of Kolkata’s most prominent government hospitals. The second-year student of the chest medicine department was on duty on Thursday night and went to the seminar hall to take rest since there are no separate on-call rooms in the hospital, people aware of the matter said.
